Dion Waiters will undergo season-ending surgery on left ankle

Considering he'll undergo surgery to correct the issue, it seems doubtful he was recovering as hoped.

According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, Waiters will opt to go under the knife, which would cause his 2017-18 campaign to come to an abrupt end.

Prior to this decision, Waiters had been resting and rehabilitating the ankle, but it was unclear if he had been making significant progress.

Waiters sprained the ankle on December 23, causing him to miss the past eight games.

Flooding and Ice Jams Possible Friday
The cold front dragged Thursday morning's moderate temperatures down quickly to around and below freezing temperatures. It will be rainy, then turn cold and possibly become pretty slippery in the midstate this weekend.

Ultimately, Waiters signed a four-year, $52 million deal with the Heat in July after Miami was unable to land Gordon Hayward in free agency.

Waiters said in September he was told last season that the estimated timetable for a return from such surgery would be eight to 10 months.

The fifth-year guard out of Syracuse was averaging 14.3 points, 3.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds on the season but was shooting a shade under 40% from the field.

The Heat have won six straight games and moved into fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 24-17 record.
