The heaviest of the rain is expected Friday night through Saturday morning.

Saturday's high is expected to be at 53 degrees, while Saturday night is going to get even cooler with a hard freeze and a low of 25 degrees, Platt said.

By the time it's over, as much as 1 to 2 inches of rain could fall across central and southern counties, with higher amounts forecast for northern counties.

It will be rainy, then turn cold and possibly become pretty slippery in the midstate this weekend. At night, there will be a low of around 35 degrees.

Boston has a slight chance of rain early Friday with more expected after 11 a.m. continuing overnight into early Saturday afternoon, according to the service's seven-day forecast for the city.

While the low temperature Friday will be around 32, Saturday's low will only be around 10.

The cold front dragged Thursday morning's moderate temperatures down quickly to around and below freezing temperatures.

The NWS suggests residents keep an eye on area waterways and be alert for sudden rises.

Paducah NWS meteorologist Rick Shanklin said returning Murray State students should wait as late as Sunday to travel back to the region.

They said accumulating ice before the start of snow could limit the ability of highway crews to improve driving conditions, particularly in the early hours of the event.
