JFK Evacuated, Some Flights Shut Down

The flooding has caused further delays and cancellations at JFK as New York City recovers from the " bomb cyclone " that hit the northeast last Thursday.

The airport's runways and taxiways were fully operational, the port authority said earlier Sunday, but airlines remain in recovery mode after the storm, and many hundreds of passengers are stranded from canceled flights.

In New York, the National Weather Service chalked up record lowest high temperatures for the day at each of its climate sites except for Central Park, with temperatures about 25 degrees below normal. "Customers may experience residual delays, particularly for global flights".

Making matters worse, the FDNY and Port Authority of NY and New Jersey responded to reports of a water main break in Terminal 4 just after 1:30 p.m. Sunda (Jan. 7).

Compounding problems related to the flooding and extreme cold, two Boeing 777s-belonging to Kuwait Airways and China Southern Airlines-clipped each other on the tarmac outside T4 January 6.

"It's getting like a madhouse", traveler Steven Litvin told NBC 4 NY. But when flights resumed, the number of planes coming in, particularly large planes flying internationally, outpaced the number of gates that could handle them, and a backlog began.

I rolled her over and grabbed him and started running outside with him". "So I picked him up and took him outside", Duncan said. Ryland Ward spent two months in the hospital since the November 5 shooting at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs.

That mismatch continued into Saturday, as the airlines played catch-up on the flights they had sent elsewhere or had canceled.

"Two small children hungry, thirsty and exhausted with no facilities or help in baggage reclaim". All passengers were evacuated safely and no one was injured, the Port Authority said, though the collision made the delays even worse. "Yet we're relying on infrastructure systems where they land and the airports that they have to go through that are just aging and aging". She waited four hours to finally get her bags: an argument for always carrying on, if we've ever heard one. Kuwait Airways said all passengers and crew deplaned without incident.

The Port Authority asked customers to call on airlines for updates on flight information.

The Port Authority said there would be no worldwide arrivals for some time due to the flood, though global departure were not affected.

The burst pipe caused 3 inches of water to flood the arrivals area of Terminal 4, which services Delta and 30 worldwide airlines, before it cascaded onto the roadway, where it froze, Cotton said. Passengers reported waits of up to five hours for luggage to be delivered from planes onto the carousels.
