Multiple Sam's Club stores close without notice across nation

"After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we've chose to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy", Sam's Club posted to Twitter on Thursday, adding that closing stores "is never easy".

Business Insider first reported on a slew of stores locking their doors Thursday morning, leaving disgruntled employees and confused customers.

Local media outlets in Texas, New York, New Jersey and Arizona were some of those confirming stores being closed on Thursday. Stay with for updates. Making Change at Walmart, a campaign backed by the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, estimates that 150 to 160 people work at each Sam's Club store, meaning the closures could affect about 10,000 people.

On the same day one of the Quad Cities' Sam's Club locations closed, multiple Sam's Clubs across the country were reportedly closing. Sam's Club member Larry Wilson took a more pragmatic approach.

"Walmart is the largest employer in the country and to see them make that kind of effort to over a million workers is a big deal. and I think further evidence that the tax reform and tax cut package are having the impact that we had hoped", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters.

According to the statement, as many as 200 full-time and part-time employees were laid off from the closure in Linden alone.

BJ's, a membership chain like Sam's Club and Costco, also said that it has "had an immediate increase in Sam's Club members joining BJ's Wholesale Club".

Also Thursday, - the owner and operator of Sam's Club - announced it would raise minimum pay to $11 per hour and give employees one-time bonuses of $1,000.

Several other states where CNNMoney has confirmed stores will be closing did not have such notices posted as of Thursday afternoon.

The wholesale clubs' official closure date is January 26, Buckner said. The company has not yet said why the Goshen store will be closing or how many stores in total will be closed.
