Toyota is bringing Alexa to select vehicles this year

Amazon's Alexa digital assistant will soon ride shotgun with Toyota drivers.

Look for Amazon's Alexa to be in everything, but connected-assistant competitors, from Apple to Google to smaller Chinese companies, are breathing down her neck.

"The notion that there is this new layer that can replace apps and operating systems means the stakes are high". Increasingly, voice assistants are becoming a big part of that mobile equation. "What we're seeing is heavy competition between all the personal assistants", says Gartner analyst Brian Blau.

The tie-up marks the latest step in Amazon's onward march to attain global domination via the device by integrating it within all aspects of consumers' lives, with the assistant first emerging on select Toyota and Lexus models this prior to a wider fleet roll out in 2019.

"Even robots have bad days".

"The world has become just too complex for just any single company to insist on a proprietary, closed solution", Park said.

Six months since Amazon and Microsoft shook hands for coupling Windows 10 with Alexa, we are having the initial signs of its arrival.

Google Assistant also will be built into smart displays, said Huffman, allowing users to make video calls with Google Duo, watch YouTube videos, and search for pictures in Google Photos.

The skirmish began when the two started shoving each other while waiting for the ball to be inbounded under the Miami basket. Tuesday night against the Miami Heat showed a different side to Canada's only National Basketball Association franchise.

Why the Emphasis on Google Assistant?

LG's vision for its artificial intelligence platform includes enabling appliances, cars, air conditioners and other "everyday" devices to adapt to users' individual preferences as well as collaborate on tasks.

Both companies usually shun conventions like CES, preferring to debut gadgets at their own press events.

"Televisions, refrigerators and more will understand you and your preferences, and tailor an experience that is right for you", said Samsung global consumer electronics president H.S. Kim.

The two companies - and to a lesser extent, Apple, with Siri, and Microsoft, with Cortana - are waging a fierce struggle to establish their assistants as de facto standards for a new generation of voice-controlled devices. Samsung televisions sold in the U.S. will have Bixby to respond to spoken requests or control other home devices.

Vegas is also the place where many TV manufacturers show off sinfully large screens. Amazon has similar arrangements with other carmakers, and in November it announced a suite of voice-activated work tools to bring Alexa to the office. So apart from asking it some of the usual things, such as playing music or giving a weather report, passengers can also use the service to interact with smart-home devices to turn lights on in their homes or open their garage doors.
