The correction came after an early Thursday update that raised the missing to 48 in the mudslides triggered by heavy rains just weeks after major wildfires scorched the area.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew from San Diego helped rescue a family of five and two dogs from the roof of a home in the mudslide's path in Montecito.

Rescue teams removed debris from several roads in the Los Angeles area, including on Coastal Highway 101 where a 50-kilometer stretch was closed for some time in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

"While some residents cooperated with the evacuations, many did not".
