Chelsea Manning appears to be running for US Senate

Chelsea Manning, the transgender woman known as Bradley Manning when she was convicted in 2013 of leaking a trove of classified documents, has filed documents to run for a U.S. Senate seat in Maryland.

The Federal Election Commission website shows a January 11 filing for "Chelsea Manning for U.S. Senate" with the party affiliation registered as Democrat - suggesting a primary challenge for Cardin. Manning did not immediately return CNN's request for comment Saturday.

She moved back to Maryland last year after President Barack Obama commuted her 35-year sentence in the final days of his administration.

She will be challenging Democrat Ben Cardin, who is up for re-election in November and has served two terms. It said, however, an outside candidate with national name recognition, such as Manning, could tap a network of donors interested in elevating a progressive agenda.

Cardin was easily re-elected in 2012, beating his Republican challenger by 30 points in the heavily-Democratic state.

In 2010, Chelsea Manning was charged with violating the Espionage Act for providing WikiLeaks with over 250,000 documents. She was placed in solitary confinement after attempting suicide twice.
