Father of 3-year-old Indian girl charged with murder

The father of a 3-year-old girl whose body was found near the family's suburban Dallas home less than a year after she was adopted from an Indian orphanage was indicted Friday on a capital murder charge.

According to Dallas County, Wesley Mathews has now been charged with Capital Murder of a Child under 10 years of age.

Wesley Mathews, who was arrested in October past year after he changed his story about her disappearance, was initially charged with injury to a child will now also face a murder charge after the autopsy of his adopted daughter Sherin revealed she died from "homicidal violence".

Mathews' wife, 35-year-old Sini Mathews was charged with abandoning or endangering a child.

Sini Mathews, Sherin's mother, was also indicted with a charge of child abandonment against her.

On October 24, Sherin's body was found in a culvert near her home in the Dallas-area.

Parents of 3-Year-Old Are Indicted in Her Death

Wesley Mathews came under suspicion by authorities after he changed the story surrounding Sherin's disappearance and death several times.

If Wesley is convicted of capital murder, he could face life in prison or the death penalty.

"We have some information in terms of what might have happened, but we are still investigating", District Attorney Faith Johnson said during a Friday news conference, adding that her office had not decided whether it would seek the death penalty. Both carry prison time of between two years and 20 years.

A statement from Sini Mathews' lawyers said that the indictments indicated that she had nothing to do with Sherin's death.

"There is virtually no employee in the Richardson Police Department who has not been involved in this case", Police Chief Jimmy Spivey said Friday. The tampering with evidence indictment claims Wesley altered, destroyed and concealed a human corpse with intent to impair evidence for a later police investigation. She's accused of abandoning Sherin. At first, he allegedly claimed that he lost track of her after kicking her out of the home at 3 the morning for not drinking her milk.

The American adoption agency the Mathews used with Sherin last summer has since been suspended by India after the government said it showed "negligent" behavior in the assessment of adoptive parents.
