Forecast: Additional snow possible today, Sunday

Saturday in State College will see a high of 26 degrees with 1 to 3 inches of snow after the precipitation changes over.

As warmer temperatures help melt large snowbanks and heavy rain moves into the area, flooding is becoming a rising concern for homeowners in the Bay State. Records highs for today, January 12th could be tied or broken.

The mercury could fall as low as 14 degrees overnight, the weather service said.

Though accumulations are expected to be light, driving conditions in areas of freezing precipitation are expected to be hazardous with slick spots developing on roads, bridges and overpasses. As the rain ends, temperatures will crash from the 50s before daybreak, down into the 20s and 30s by mid morning.

Saturday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low near 5 degrees.

Freezing rain is when rain hits roads and other surfaces that are 32 degrees or below and the rain freezes on contact. This morning, it was 55 degrees in Dunkirk-Fredonia and the low tonight will get down to 13 - a 42-degree drop in less than 24 hours.

Sunday: Dry and colder.

An AccuWeather projection shows a high of 24 with a low of zero for today, as snow tapers off with north-northwest winds gusting 19 miles per hour. This includes rain plus the water equivalent of snow and ice. Highs on Saturday will be 20 to 30 degrees lower than today's highs, and will likely be reached early in the day with temperatures holding steady or falling through the day.

The next chance of snow looks to be Tuesday pm into Wednesday.
