India Considers Israeli Spike Missiles Deal Through G-to-G Route

On the United Nations vote issue, speaking on Friday ahead of the arrival of Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to India on a six-day visit starting Sunday, Israeli Ambassador Daniel Carmon pointed out that recently when Indian Judge Justice Dalveer Bhandari was contesting for re-election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Israel had gone so far in India's support as to adopt Justice Bhandari as its candidate too.

"I don't think it can influence the relationship".

Officials said they had been asked by Israel to allow some of the offset clauses to be made up by investment in agriculture or environment related businesses, which India is likely to concede. "We can not always fulfil those requests and this is why we are two different countries", he told reporters here.

The 193-member U.N. General Assembly agreed to hold a rare emergency special session on December 22, at the request of Arab and Muslim countries, to vote on a draft resolution, demanding the USA reverse its decision.

It will be the second visit by an Israeli Prime Minister to India after a gap of 15 years since Ariel Sharon visited New Delhi in 2003.

India will purchase Spike anti-tank missiles from Israel after initially canceling a $525 million missile deal with an Israeli firm previous year. A press release from the Embassy of Israel in Delhi said that Mr. Netanyahu will also visit the iCreate innovation campus and centre. Now, it is learnt that the government is considering buying the missiles through government-to-government route.

Israeli ambassador to India Daniel Carmon has termed it a historic visit, which will strengthen the growing partnership between the two countries.

"Since we talk about democracies, similar values, similar challenges..., the relationship is so strong between both the countries that our feeling is (that) nothing can reverse it", he said. The Ambassador informed that the Israeli Prime Minister will arrive with economic delegations of 130 businessmen with an enthusiasm to increase business with India. It is reported that he will be accompanied by the relatives of the Jewish priest who was killed along with his wife in the 26/11 attack in Mumbai.
