Kerber clinches Sydney title

Germany's Angelique Kerber won a seventh straight match as she steamed into the semi-finals of the Sydney International on Thursday boosting her confidence for next week's Australian Open.

The German has been a different player at the start of this season to the one who struggled so badly in 2017 and goes into the Australian Open as a real contender to reclaim the title she won two years ago.

The second set witnessed an early exchange of breaks before Kerber broke the Australian to love to move 4-3 ahead and picked up her 11th career title when Barty found the net after yet another powerful Kerber forehand.

Kerber defeats Ashleigh Barty 6-4, 6-4 in the Sydney finals. Giorgi beat defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 6-2. I played some of my best tennis this week and it wasn't enough.

Elise Mertens successfully defended her Hobart International title with a 6-1 4-6 6-3 victory over Mihaela Buzarnescu.

"So now, I just am trying to playing like I played years before and enjoying it again". "I am really looking forward to the rest of the year", Kerber said in a court-side interview after claiming a first title since her U.S. Open triumph.

It was Kerber's second win over the 19th-ranked Barty in three meetings.

She will play fellow Australian Daria Gavrilova, who had a walkover win over Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza when the Spanish player withdrew from her quarterfinal with a right thigh injury.
