Officials prep for MLK Jr. events

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation Friday declaring Martin Luther King Jr.

Leading up to this Monday, New Orleans will celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday with a series of free events.

Using the hashtag #ThankYouMLK50, Twitter users are encouraged to express their sentiments in reference to MLK.

"It was Dr. King whose pervasive arguments and powerful preachments put steel in the backbones of men and women in the American South who then marched through the hateful threats. and absorbed the brutal blows.", Swan said.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s niece visited Collier County days before the local school district plans to hold class on the day honoring her uncle.

The school district is allowing parents to keep their children home without penalty and many school bands will still be participating in Collier County's MLK Day celebration.

The program includes the presentation of nine scholarships to high school seniors ranging from $500 to $2,500 awarded on the basis of essays submitted detailing how King's ideals influenced their own aspirations for the future.

All Arizona State Parks & Trails will offer free admission for state residents during Martin Luther King Jr. Bishop Harry Cohen, president of the United Holy Church of America, will speak.

You could do this anytime, but Monday's a good time: The the State Museum has posted online audio from a 1962 speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation at an event in NYC.
