PDP lawmaker Aijaz Ahmed Mir calls Kashmiri terrorists 'martyrs'

PDP lawmaker Aijaz Ahmed Mir calls Kashmiri terrorists 'martyrs'

A lawmaker from Jammu and Kashmir's ruling Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday said slain militants were "martyrs" and nobody should celebrate their death, prompting the Opposition to claim that ally BJP was behind such statements in a bid to improve their image. "I request you all to stop politicising their killing and take some appropriate steps to end this violence", said Mir adding, "This house has to end the blame game over killings".

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that terrorists and separatists are enemies of Kashmir. If they believe so, then why do they liquidate them (militants).

Despite his apparent sympathy for the Kashmiri militants, Mir - who represents the Shopian district, a hotbed for terrorist activities - himself had been a target of a militant activity recently.

He also expressed his sympathy over the killing of security forces.

Bill Brown , sheriff of Santa Barbara , said: "The best way I can describe it is, it looked like a World War One battlefield". Ellen DeGeneres also shared an image of the devastation near her home on Twitter , saying: 'This is not a river.

On further questions from the reporters asking him whether he actually feels the militants are martyrs, Mir said, "Jo Kashmir ke hein, chahey kisi bhi halat mein marein, woh martyr hein (Those who hail from Kashmir are martyrs irrespective of the fact under what circumstances they get killed)". "The PDP's ideology was that whenever any militant was killed, I would visit their families for condolences". He also said that the children who have gone down the wrong track should be counselled and brought back. The PDP is in alliance with the BJP (in Jammu and Kashmir).

Reminded of that attack, Mr Mir said: "That can be because of an ideological clash".

Adding fuel to the controversy, the Wachi MLA added that the deaths of militants must not be celebrated and people should sympathise with parents of militants along with jawans. "The BJP will have to tell whether it agrees with what its alliance partner has said", Congress spokesperson Tom Vadakkan said.
