Suspect In Deadly Fake 911 Call Formally Charged

Barriss is wanted in Kansas for placing a "swatting" call that led to the deadly shooting of 28-year-old Andrew Finch.

Police in Wichita, Kan., charged Barriss with making a false alarm after someone called 911 with a similar shooting-and-kidnapping report at the home of Andrew Finch.

Police say that Barriss had called police to report a hostage situation, telling officers on 28 December 2017 that he had his family at gunpoint and had doused the house with petrol.

Barriss is being held on a bond of $500,000.

Twenty-five-year-old Tyler Barriss made his first court appearance in Kansas Friday following extradition from California.

In Kansas, a defendant can be charged with murder when prosecutors believe that a death has been caused due to the commission of certain felonies. Police have said he moved a hand toward his waistband and an officer, fearing he was reaching for a gun, fired a single shot and killed him. He was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on Thursday afternoon.

Barriss was arrested the next day in Los Angeles. According to information from the City of Glendale, California, Barriss was previously arrested in October 2015 as a result of a connection to a bomb threat made to ABC Studios.

Barriss also faces charges in Calgary, Canada, according to The Globe and Mail, as spotted by Rolling Stone. The shooting is still under investigation, police said.

Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett told reporters following the brief hearing that he is still reviewing whether any charges will be filed against the police officer, and once he makes a determination that decision would be made public.

The Calgary Police Service allege that Barriss called 911 at about 7:40 p.m. on December 22 and told an operator he killed his father and was holding his mother and younger brother hostage in the 2300 block of 17b Street S.W.

Swatting is the act of making a fake emergency call in an attempt to get officer to respond to someone's address.

Barriss' next court appearance will be later this month.
