Walmart closing more than 60 Sam's Club stores

Walmart confirmed Thursday that it is closing dozens of Sam's Club warehouse stores - a move that a union-backed group estimated could cost thousands of jobs - on the same day the company announced that it was boosting its starting salary for us workers and handing out bonuses.

As a member of Sam's Club, you are entitled to a refund at any time if you are not satisfied, the company says on its website. The only other Florida store on that list was in the town of Fern Park, near Altamonte Springs.

The news of the sudden closures comes as the big-box retailer's parent company - Walmart - announced it would use savings from new tax legislation to raise starting wages for its employees.

Sam's Club posted on Twitter that the locations were closed to "better align our locations with our strategy". "We will work to place as many associates as possible in new roles at nearby locations, and we'll provide them with support, resources, and severance pay to those eligible", Furner wrote.

Two of the stores were in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, but news outlets across the nation - including Baltimore, Buffalo, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, New Jersey, Memphis and Houston - reported similar unannounced closures of Sam's Club stores Thursday.

The Hawkeyes committed 31 turnovers but overcame those miscues with sharp shooting from Kent McCausland, who sank five 3-pointers. Frazier led IL with a career-high 27 points, including seven 3-pointers, while Leron Black and Aaron Jordan added 18 points each.

Walmart will close 63 of its 660 Sam's Clubs over the next few weeks, with some shut already. Walmart said in the press release that laid-off employees will receive 60 days' worth of pay.

In Hampton Roads, the Sam's Club located at Little Creek Marketplace off Tidewater Drive in Norfolk was closed.

However, Anne Hatfield from Walmart Corporate Communications confirmed that no Sam's Clubs will be closing in Austin or in Central Texas.

The membership warehouse said that it plans to convert another 13 into online distribution centers.

"Club is closed today so we could inform our associates so we gave them the day off and closed the club". On average, Sam's Clubs employ about 175 people. The one-time bonus represents a payment of about $400 million in the current fiscal year, which ends January 31.
