White House doctor declares Trump 'in excellent health'

Dr. Ronny Jackson says in a statement released by the White House that Trump's physical Friday "went exceptionally well".

President Donald Trump arrived for his first medical checkup as president at Walter Reed military hospital on Friday, undergoing a physical examination amid suggestions in a recent book and by his detractors that he's mentally unfit.

"The President is in excellent health and I look forward to briefing some of the details on Tuesday", Jackson said.

Jackson is expected to speak to reporters on the results of the exam during Tuesday's press briefing.

Past presidents are not known to have been tested for mental acuity while in office - including Ronald Reagan, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease five years after leaving the White House.

There is a long history of the White House picking and choosing what to reveal about the Commander-in-Chief's health, said Barbara Perry, director of presidential studies at the University of Virginia's Miller Center. Bandy X. Lee briefed members of Congress on concerns about Trump's mental fitness to be president, despite advice from the American Psychiatric Association not to suggest a diagnosis of any mental health issue if the person has not personally examined the individual in question.

Usually going for a medical check-up isn't a big deal, unless of course you're the President of the United States of America.

Trump has claimed his physical health has always been strong.

He also said Trump took Crestor, a cholesterol lowering statin; a low dose of aspirin to prevent heart attacks; antibiotics to treat skin rosacea; and Propecia for baldness.

The president's medical examination was announced last month after he slurred part of a speech in which he declared the United States recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Trump does not smoke, and he does not consume alcohol.

The physician, a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy, has served as the presidential doctor for the past three administrations.

He told them that he expects it to go well and that he would be surprised if it did not.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, he published a letter from his long-term doctor Harold Bornstein that stated he was in "excellent physical health".

Jeffress also said he was "grateful" to have Trump as president and thanked him for the "courage" to protect the U.S. He added that Trump supports immigration policies that welcome "those who can contribute to our society".
