A senior South Korean official said on Friday that Seoul is seeking to form a joint women's ice hockey team with North Korea to participate in next month's Winter Olympics being hosted by the South.

But interest among South Korean people is low and ticket sales have also been affected by worldwide concerns about North Korea.

Lee Do-hoon, the special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, arrived in Washington D.C on Wednesday and met Joseph Yun, the USA special representative for North Korea policy, and Matthew Pottinger, the senior director for Asian affairs on the White House National Security Council, to discuss on the outcome of the high-level talks between the two Koreas, the Yonhap news agency reported. "We still remember the participation of DPR Korea in the OCA's 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, in 2014, and the attention and interest that this generated among the people and the media". A joint march at the opening ceremony would be a stunning statement for the "Peace Olympics", which will open about 50 miles (80 kilometres) from the heavily fortified Korean border on February 9.

China collected three golds, four silvers and two bronze at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Recently, the US President Donald Trump expressed interest and willingness to hold talks with North Korea.

Separately, the International Olympic Committee has proposed a meeting on January 20 at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, involving the rival Koreas to discuss North Korea's participation in Pyeongchang.

As it it still unclear which Russian athletes the International Olympic Committee will allow to compete PyeongChang, the OAR have been excluded from the overall table provided by Gracenote. Cross-country skiers and speed skaters are understood to be among those who could benefit.

North Korea has yet to comment on the South's offer, which is in the spirit of the original deal and even goes beyond it. Joining teams would make that issue moot and allow even more North Korean athletes to compete. South Korea are grouped with Sweden, Switzerland and Japan in the women's tournament.
