3 injured as rope tears during Army Day rehearsal

While rehearsing for Army Day parade at Delhi Cantonment playground, three jawans were injured during slithering operation following which an inquiry has been ordered. The accident happened when the army men were descending from the chopper by means of a rope; the rope broke down abruptly and the soldiers plummeted to the ground.

Following the incident, display of slithering operations has been cancelled for the Army Day parade on January 15.

"Slithering operation ceases for all ALH with immediate effect after the accident". The army jawans are undergoing treatment at Army Hospital Research And Referral in New Delhi, IBT reported.

The incident occurred due to helicopter boom malfunction.

Following the incident, the Army suspended slithering operations involving Dhruv helicopters till a probe was completed, the sources said. "An investigation is in progress", said an Army officer.

The Army Day commemorates the day when General (later Field Marshal) KM Carriappa took over the command of Army from General Sir FRR Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief in 1949 and became the first Commander-in-Chief of Indian Army post Independence.

ALH Dhruv is an indigenously developed helicopter manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
