However, Sako kept his place after scoring in that game and the former Wolves frontman fully justified his first league start since September.

"I have a very positive feeling about our group of players, we have a talented squad, as our results have shown, so I think we will continue to do well but we have to be on it every week".

Referee Michael Oliver waved play on, despite replays showing that first contact from Tarkowski may have been on Sako's foot rather than the ball.

Roy Hodgson's side deservedly took the lead in the 21st minute though when Christian Benteke set up Sako who fired a deflected shot under Nick Pope in the Clarets goal. The Ivorian tried to lob the Burnley 'keeper, but his effort was cleared off the line by Ben Mee.

Sako nearly scored a second that would've bettered his goal against Brighton in the FA Cup earlier this week, as a looping cross from Zaha was his first-time on the volley only for it to cut across goal and into the crowd.

Sam Vokes' near-post header hit the side-netting for Burnley in the second period from Steven Defour's right-wing cross, before Benteke headed high and wide when similarly well placed after Sako had created space to chip to him from the left wing. "They were better than us in the first half, not by miles".

A second goal in two games from Bakary Sako was enough to secure the three points for the Eagles that would take the hosts up to 12th, and into serious contention for a top-10 finish having looked like near-certainties for relegation a few weeks ago.

"Credit to Burnley because they are doing very well but for us it's another very important game and we will be going into it looking to get maximum points which is no different to any other week".

Giving credit where it's due, Palace's defense did a stellar job of keeping out the building number of Burnley presses.
