Korea, US Discuss Coordination over Inter-Korean Relations

Bilateral trade between China and North Korea last year dropped 10.5 percent compared to the figure from the previous year, spokesman for the General Administration of Customs Huang Songping revealed at a press briefing Friday, according to the Associated Press.

"The meeting will bring together nations from across the globe to demonstrate global solidarity against 's risky and illegal nuclear and ballistic missile programs", the department said in a statement Thursday. Imports from the country also plunged 82 percent in December.

China's trade with North Korea plunged by 50 percent in December as United Nations sanctions tightened, the Beijing government said on Friday.

Amid the unprecedented escalation of the tensions on the Korean Peninsula since summer, Russian Federation and China proposed the so-called double freeze plan: with North Korea, on one hand, halting its nuclear and missile programs, while its neighbors, on the other hand, would refrain from holding joint drills with the United States in the region.

China, which has traditionally served as an economic lifeline for the North, has started putting pressure on Pyongyang to curb its ballistic and nuclear ambitions.

Next week, the United States and Canada are to host a meeting on the nuclear standoff with North Korea in Vancouver, bringing together friendly powers from around the world.

The State Department's director of policy planning Brian Hook says Washington will look for practical mechanisms to pressure Pyongyang.

Vice President Mike Pence will lead the official USA delegation.

While China has rejected calls from past presidents to do more, Beijing is starting to go along with US initiatives to put pressure on North Korea, even accepting USA demands for restrictions on oil exports to the North.

"The South also delivered a document presenting its position regarding the North's participation in the Pyeongchang Olympics and matters on cultural events", the ministry added.
