Spartak sparks racism storm with offensive tweet

A video posted on the club's Twitter account showed Brazilian players Luiz Adriano, Pedro Rocha and Fernando exercising during a training camp in the United Arab Emirates.

Spartak have already been punished by UEFA for racism this season having been fined £33,000 for offences committed by their fans during a Champions League tie against Liverpool in October.

The 19-year-old faces a minimum ban of 10 matches if found guilty by European football's governing body.

Russian Federation host the 2018 World Cup finals in June but some players have raised concerns over their suitability given that racist incidents remain commonplace in the country's domestic league.

Spartak defender Leonid Mironov has also been charged with racially abusing Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster.

"Please note that, at its meeting in May 2017, the FIFA Council emphasised that member associations and referees should be ready to adopt a strict policy to deal with incidents of racist nature".

Spartak Moscow have become embroiled in a fresh racism row after posting a tweet about three black players.

Spartak's tweet comes a week after the Reds' Roberto Firmino was put under investigation by the FA after allegedly making remarks to Everton's Mason Holgate during an FA Cup match.

Football equality group Kick it Out also criticised Spartak, saying the post "only continues to highlight the prejudices towards black people in Russian Federation".

"It is a reminder, that along with the whole of football, there is significant work to do to eradicate racism of all forms from the sport".
