Closing Bell: Sensex inches closer to 35K

The index of industrial production rose 8.4 percent year-on-year in November, the statistics ministry said Friday, which was much higher than the 4.4 percent economists' had expected.

Closer home, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose by 251.12 points or 0.73 percent to 34,843.51, while the broader Nifty index ended up 60.30 points or 0.56 percent at 10,741.55.

Meanwhile, WPI inflation fell to a three-month low of 3.58 per cent in December which assuaged price rise worries.

Shares of Sobha (up 1.13 per cent), Prestige Estates Projects (up 0.65 per cent) and Delta Corp (up 0.44 per cent) were also trading with gains in the index. Nifty too came within striking distance of 10,800-mark, peaking to all-time high of 10,782.65.

Sensex and Nifty soared to new heights over positive macroeconomic data and encouraging q3 corporate earnings.

In sector terms, the finance surged the most by gaining 1.53 per cent, followed by bankex 1.25 per cent, consumer durables 1.13 per cent, power 0.29 per cent, metal 0.22 per cent and realty 0.10 per cent.

All sectoral and thematic indices were in the green this morning.
