Moon hosts luncheon for N. Koreans

During the parade of nations, they stood only for the USA team.

President Trump's right-hand man was at the Gangneung Ice Arena on Saturday night to watch the opening session of short-track speedskating and, for the second evening in succession, he was unable to avoid a connection to North Korea.

The Trump impersonator was identified as American Dennis Alan, while the Kim Jong Un impersonator is from Australia.

Showing a flair for the dramatic, Kim Yo Jong carried a blue folder with a personal letter from her brother, carefully placing it on a table where the delegation sat across from Moon and his aides.

Analysts say the North's Olympic diplomatic drive seeks to loosen worldwide sanctions against it and undermine the alliance between Seoul and Washington.

North Korea has sent some of the highest level officials ever to the south for these games, the result of diplomacy by Seoul that led to an agreement between the two countries - still formally at war - to participate together in the Winter Games.

He said the United States would take whatever "action is necessary to defend our homeland" against the North Korean nuclear threat, according to an interview with NBC.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said South Korea is viewing hosting the Olympics as a way to improve diplomatic relations with North Korea.

Coach Sarah Murray recalled pulling up for the game in Incheon and the crowd on the road outside split pretty evenly between people against the North Koreans joining the team and supporters waving flags showing the full Korean peninsula.

Prior to 2016, the Gaels had also previously been tops among all participating Westchester teams in 2010 and 2011. This event started with a parade, where everyone could show off their plunging costumes.

The vice president's visit was also marked by bad blood between Pence and some USA athletes. It has argued that yielding to dialogue on North Korea's terms would effectively equal accepting it as a nuclear power.

At the end of his weekly general audience at the Vatican Feb. 7, the pope offered his prayers and greetings to all those gathered for the XXIII Winter Olympic Games Feb. 9-25 in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

"South Korea has some hard homework to solve regarding some countries", President Moon said in a speech before Pence arrived.

Before flying south, she said, she had expected "things would be very different and unfamiliar", according to a statement from Moon's office.

Instead, Pence arrived late to a reception for delegation leaders Friday and stayed for just five minutes - without interacting with the North Koreans.

As it turned out, with the two Koreas celebrating a moment of unity, the United States was left outmaneuvered by an adversary and out of step with an ally.

Her arrival on Kim Jong Un's private jet with a coterie of 22 officials was broadcast live on South Korean television.

As the Olympics get underway in Pyeongchang, the motives behind the apparent thaw in relations between North and South Korea are not entirely clear, but any turn away from belligerence should be nurtured.

As they shook hands, the North and South Koreans spoke briefly.
