Openly gay teacher fired from Miami Catholic school after getting married

The Catholic school teacher, Jocelyn Morffi, posted photos her marriage last weekend to Facebook and was sacked from the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School on Thursday after returning to work the day before.

"This weekend, I married the love of my life and, unfortunately, I was terminated from my job as a result", she said.

In an Instagram post, Morffi stated, "In their eyes I'm not the correct sort of Catholic for my decision in partner".

On Thursday, parents received a letter about Morffi's firing, and on Friday, about 20 parents demanded to know why. Archdiocese of Miami spokeswoman Mary Ross Agosta confirmed that Morffi had been fired, but would not elaborate on the reasons except to say that the teacher had broken her contract.

"We were completely outraged, all of the parents", Samantha Mills, whose child was in Morffi's class past year, told the Herald.

Mary Ross Agosta, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Miami said Morffi was sacked because 'she broke the contract she signed when she began teaching at a Catholic school'.

A LESBIAN teacher has been fired from her Catholic school just days after marrying the "love of (her) life".

One parent told the paper: "We were extremely livid".

"Our only concern was the way she was with our children, the way she taught our children and this woman by far was one of the best teachers out there", Cini told the Miami Herald. Her contract contained a moral turpitude clause.

The teacher was popular with her class and the wider school community - giving up her spare time to run Teach Hope, a non-profit run alongside school kids that makes sandwiches for the homeless and needy. When Morffi refused to do the same, she was sacked.

She just minded that Morffi was "by a long shot a standout amongst other instructors out there".

"As a teacher in a Catholic school their responsibility is partly for the spiritual growth of the children,".

"When they sign the contract, the agreement is to follow policies, procedures and teachings of the Catholic Church".

In April 2014, after a judge in Florida lifted the state's ban on same-sex marriage, Archbishop Thomas Wenski, who oversees Miami's Catholic archdiocese, sent a message to all employees, according to the Religion News Service.

Reports also revealed that Morffi returned to work on Wednesday and was called to the principal's office where she was told that she had to resign.

"This educator specifically has made such a commitment to the school".

Parents at Sts. Peter and Paul say they will continue to protest the school's decision. She never imposes her personal beliefs on others.
