Snapchat Users Are Petitioning To Revert To The Old Design

For more fallout from Snapchat's redesign hit the flip.

Announced last November, Snapchat's new look has been described by Snap as a concerted effort to separate "the social from the media".

Nearly 80 percent of all tweets about Snapchat are now negative, with the spike in negative mentions occurring right as the new interface started rolling out to users, according to a study from LikeFolio.

Users have flocked to various online platforms to rant about the latest Snapchat update and the biggest complaint is that it's far more disorganized now. Just 17 percent, or 391 of the reviews, give it three to five stars.

Some users have found workarounds to restore Snapchat back to an older version of the app... but according to an official statement from the company, such shortcuts can get users locked out of their own accounts.

"Snap's new product strategy and redesign runs counter to why Snapchat was appealing to its younger demographic in the first place and it could alienate that existing user base because they're now trying to cater to the masses and Wall Street", said Jessica Liu, a senior analyst at research firm Forrester.

In order to rewatch a Story, users have to swipe up and search a specific friend's name to rewatch their Story. Now the page is full of sponsored content and featured celebrity stories.

Interestingly, the Instagram Stories feature also endured user backlash when it was first released in the summer of 2016, but that backlash was not almost as dramatic as Snapchat's and disappeared within a week. A fake viral tweet purporting to be a Twitter direct-message conversation between Snapchat and user Isaac Svobodny, in which the company promises to reconsider the app's format, racked up over 1.3 million re-tweets in a matter of days.

And Senator Lamar Alexander, Republican of Tennessee, said that past tariffs imposed in 2002 by President George W. Trump on Monday blamed China, Japan, South Korea and other countries for the huge United States trade deficit.

As of Tuesday morning, for example, a petition on to remove the new update has attracted over 660,000 of a targeted one million signatures. How about going back to the older version? On the earnings call, CEO Evan Spiegel said that 40 million users had the redesigned Snapchat app as of February 6, and that has increased as Snap expanded the rollout last week.

Despite the pleas, parent firm Snap Inc. now has no plans to reconsider the original design.

"Updates as big as this one can take a little getting used to, but we hope the community will enjoy it once they settle in", a Snap Inc spokeswoman was quoted as saying. This change is confusing and does not make sense. Because of the update, it has lost many of its loyal users. Eventually the storm passes as everyone grows accustomed to the changes.

The goal of Snapchat's newly redesigned app was to make it easier to use. Its user growth picked up slightly in the fourth quarter of 2017, yet it still has miles to go to catch up to other apps like Instagram.

Even with automatic updates turned off, you'll still be able to update to the new version of Snapchat by manually permitting the update.

Anyway, the screen that comes up when you go to send a snap isn't the worst thing - it's well organized.

Backlash against social media companies for interface redesigns is hardly a new phenomenon.
