Calls for gun control grow louder after Florida shooting

A student who survived Wednesday's mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla is calling on lawmakers to take concrete action against gun violence.

"The FBI has admitted that they were contacted lasted month by a person who called them to inform of Cruz's "desire to kill people" and the 'potential of him conducting a school shooting".

A Florida community joined together yesterday to mourn the 17 victims of a suspected lone gunman, as officials seek to discover how the heavily-armed teenager managed to mingle with students in one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.

The Florida department of children and families' abuse hotline was alerted to the footage, with Cruz having been listed as a victim of "alleged medical neglect and inadequate supervision" on the part of his adoptive mother Lynda Cruz, who died a year ago.

The information should have been assessed as a "potential threat to life", but the proper protocols weren't followed and the FBI's Miami office was not notified, the agency said. So far, it is the only gun authorities have recovered as part of the investigation, said Peter J. Forcelli, special agent in charge of the Miami field division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

"We have spoken with victims and families, and deeply regret the additional pain this causes all those affected by this horrific tragedy", Wray said in the statement.

The heavily armed teenager gunned down students and adults at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. "I have always been able to protect my family", he said. She said Cruz had been abusive to his girlfriend.

The sheriff's office also provides active shooter training and the schools have a single point of entry, she said.

Hogg recalled hearing gunshots ring out during an Advanced Placement environmental science class, saying the students told their teacher, who shut the door.

Senate and House leaders have also said they are willing to help pay to tear down the three-story building where the shootings happened and place a memorial on the site.

The shooting is at least the seventh at USA middle and high schools this year, and has reignited a debate over gun control. The caller was concerned that Cruz could attack a school.

The FBI, even before its revelation Friday, also had a near-brush with Cruz after receiving a tip about a comment threatening a school shooting.

'They say that tougher gun laws do not decrease gun violence.

"It's very hard because we want folks to have freedom in this country and definitely it's something that we value", said mental health expert Jerry Halverson at Roger's Behavioral Health.

Cruz told investigators that voices in his head - described as "demons" - told him what to do, according to police sources quoted by ABC. The school campus, meanwhile, was a crime scene with forensic teams scouring the grounds and retracing the steps of the shooter as described by witnesses: first firing an AR-15 assault-style rifle into classroom after classroom before slipping away amid the chaos. The Anti-Defamation League, a civil rights watchdog group, reported earlier on Thursday that they had information they believe to be credible linking Cruz to a white supremacist group called Republic of Florida. "She's gone", said Lori Alhadeff, whose daughter Alyssa was killed in the hsooting.

The investigation into what happened is still relatively new, but authorities had already interviewed more than 2,000 people, according to Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel.

"We ask that you would intervene in his disturbed mind and show him the hope that can only be found in you", one speaker asked God, holding back tears.
