Krueger wins USA's first individual speed skating medal since 2010

In reality, it was only on Thursday.

Krueger finished second to Canadian Samuel Girard, roughly two-tenths of a second behind Girard's final time of 1:24.650.

Samuel Girard of Ferland-et-Boileau, Quebec won the gold medal for Canada in the men's 1000 metres at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang on Saturday.

Seo Yira of South Korea got up from the crash on Saturday to take the bronze. Liu was disqualified, and Yira recovered to cross the finish line nearly seven seconds after Krueger.

Going from disappointment to opportunity in an instant, Girard needed a mental reset and coach Derrick Campbell and team psychologist Fabien Abejean helped provide one.

This was Krueger's first trip to the Olympics. For Canada it was their fifth gold medal and 15th medal overall. I was looking if someone was around to pass me on the line.

"I got tangled up with the American (Krueger) in the straight line". "I tried to protect my spot because I knew it was an easy moment for getting passed on the inside. It's too bad because I had the legs to do better".

"I'm really happy he was on the edge of the ice to share that with me", he said of Hamelin. "We were ready to do a great race in the semis", said Hamelin. "It was official. I certainly would have liked (to advance) but I can't feel sorry for myself".

It will give Hamelin a final chance to equal the mark of Canadians Marc Gagnon and Francois-Louis Tremblay in short-track speedskating with five medals.

Girard easily reached the podium.
