Gunman shouting 'Allahu akbar' kills five in Russian church

Security guards killed the attacker - said to be a local resident born in 1995 - but two of them were wounded in the process.

At least five people were killed and several more were injured after a shooter opened fire at a church in Russian Federation on Sunday.

A man fired at people leaving an evening service in the city of Kizlyar.

"An unknown man opened fire with a hunting rifle in Kizlyar, fatally wounding four women", the regional internal affairs ministry said in a statement. The gunman was identified as a local man who is in his 20s.

"We had finished the mass and were beginning to leave the church", Father Pavel was quoted as saying.

Four women were killed on the site of the incident, while another woman subsequently succumbed to her wounds in hospital, the document added.

Authorities have not yet disclosed what motivated the shooting, but the shooting took place in the region where Moscow has led two wars against separatists and radical religious groups since the 1991 Soviet collapse.
