Army Awards Three JROTC Cadets Killed in Florida Shooting

Fifteen-year-old Peter Wang was reportedly killed while holding open a door so students could flee from gunfire during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.

All three students were enrolled in the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

Wang, 15, was last seen holding a door open so that others could escape the shooter, his cousin told the Miami Herald.

Local West Point alumnus Chad Maxey told the Sun Sentinelthat West Point has sent a letter of admission, along with honorarium tokens, to Wang's family, personally delivered by Captain Shahin Uddin, who flew down to South Florida for this objective. The petition now has more than 56,000 signatures. A spokesman for the Army said his Medal of Heroism would be on his uniform and a second "keepsake" medal will be given to his family. If the petition reaches 100,000 signatures by March 18, the White House will be expected to give an official response.

A WhiteHouse.gov petition requesting that Wang receive a military funeral with full honors is also going viral. "Wang died a hero, and deserves to be treated as such, and deserves a full honors military burial", the petition reads.

If not been for the mishap, they would have easily topped Canadian dancers Tessa Virtue-Scott Moir's 83.67. Any wardrobe malfunction results in the loss of points that are ultimately so crucial to winning.

During last week's shooting there that killed 17 people, Petty, Wang, and Duque all worked to protect their classmates.

The funeral services for the victims of the high school massacre continue to take place a week on from the tragedy.

"Her selfless service brought peace and joy to those that had lost everything during the storm", the family said, according to the Washington Post.

On Tuesday, Florida Governor Rick Scott instructed the state's National Guard to honor the three fallen JROTC cadets. The family has set up a GoFundMe page that has already received over $40,000 in donations.

A third cadet who died, Martin Duque, will also receive a JROTC Heroism Medal from the Army.

Numerous young mourners are attending more friends' funerals in a span of days than many middle-aged people have in their lifetimes.
