Italy's Goggia wins Olympic downhill, Vonn third

Vonn, perhaps in her final downhill Olympic race, captured her third medal of her career.

Goggia put together a time of one minute, 39.22 seconds, giving her a 0.09-second advantage over the second-place Mowinckel, who almost played the spoiler.

Winter Olympics 2018 came eight years after Vonn earned a gold medal (downhill) and bronze medal (Super-G) in the 2010 games in Vancouver, which made her the only returning Olympic Super-G medalist among her this year's Winter Olympics competitors.

The team's best shot on Thursday will come in the form of 22-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin, who won gold in giant slalom to kick off the Games before the us failed to medal in slalom or super-G.

She jarred her back in December previous year in the build-up to the Games, but recovered to compete in a World Cup race a week later.

Ester Ledecka of the Czech Republic made a stunning run from back in the pack to take the Olympic super-G title on Saturday, with a mistake costing Lindsey Vonn a spot on the podium.

Vonn, likely skiing in her last Winter Olympics, remains unrelenting in her stance, and hopes that social media is used in a more positive way.

"It's sad. This is my last downhill".

I was thinking about wonderful work I've seen Oxfam do across the world, most recently with refugees coming from Myanmar. Caroline Thomson, chair of trustees, said: "It's right to admit this has been a real wake-up call".

"It hurts me when people say that because it's just not true".

"I gave it my best shot". I work hard and try to be the best person I can be. And I'm so proud to have competed with such unbelievable girls. She was unable to race in the Sochi Games four years ago because of two knee surgeries in the previous year. Plus, she also went first, which is never a fun time.

Shiffrin, the overall World Cup leader, planned to compete in the downhill as she worked to become an all-around medal threat, not simply a specialist in the technical events.

Ledecka has several events remaining on her Olympics schedule in South Korea, from the women's parallel giant slalom in snowboarding to the downhill and Alpine combined in skiing. "I didn't do that, but I won a bronze and I think he would still be proud of me".

"It's all or nothing so there is really no reason to be nervous or think about pressure or expectation because either I win or I lose", she said. No American woman has won gold in the super-G since Picabo Street at the 1998 Games.

"It's so rewarding. I would have liked a gold medal, but honestly this is fantastic, and I'm so proud", Vonn said to NBC's Heather Cox. I really don't know what happened. I take the Olympics very seriously and what they mean and what they represent, what walking under our flag means in the opening ceremony'.

"I didn't make any mistakes", Vonn said. I love you Grandpa. Some Trump supporters delighted in her sixth place finish in the Super G race on Saturday.
