NCP Candidate Jonathone Sangma Shot Dead in Poll-bound Meghalaya

NCP Candidate Jonathone Sangma Shot Dead in Poll-bound Meghalaya

Four people, including the National Congress Party (NCP) candidate Jonathone N Sangma, have been killed in an IED blast in Meghalaya's Garo Hills on late Sunday night. My heartfelt condolences to his near and dear ones. "Three other persons in his vehicle including a policeman and two civilians were killed", Challang Ch. Momin, deputy superintendent of Meghalaya police, told AFP. "The blood of innocent spilt by the enemies of the state will not disturb peace in Meghalaya".

He accused Mukul Sangma government for its failure to utilize the sanctioned funds for the state at an election rally at Songsak in East Garo Hills, which was attended by BJP candidate of Songsak Thomas Sangma, Ronjeng candidate Rickman G Momin and Williamnagar candidate Santosh R. Marak.

The other victims who faced similar fate like the NCP candidate are Samin Hassan, who was Jonathone's personal security officer and a Class 12 college student from Williamnagar who had accompanied the candidate to the election campaign.

Jonathone Sangma had reportedly received death threats while he was campaigning for 2013 assembly elections as well.

Trying to make a connect with the rural crowd of over 5000 people, who had gathered from different parts of East Garo Hills, Singh said, "People have to walk for several hours to fetch a bucket of water in the hills of Meghalaya, when the state boost of highest rainfall in the country", while adding that if BJP was voted to power every household would be provided with clean drinking water. Sangma had recently joined the NCP and was contesting against Congress minister Deborah C Marak. The desperate act will not be tolerated.

Supporter of Sufi leader kills 3 police in Iran
WATCH: Another video posted shortly afterward shows a vehicle plowing through security forces, reportedly leaving one Basiji dead. Nevertheless, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been seriously suppressing the Sufi order for some of their other beliefs.

The chief minister said the perpetrators of the crime will be "apprehended expeditiously and brought to book".

Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma condoled the NCP leader's death.

The incident took place around 7.50 pm at Samanda, a remote location almost 245km from Shillong.

Singh pointed out that the BJP government at the Centre had announced a health insurance scheme which would provide people with free treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh. We will not be cowed down by fear and intimidation and we promise that we will not let their sacrifice go in vain. "We pray that God's grace be with their near and dear ones at this time of darkness and grief", he wrote.
