Pitt removes any speculation by quickly firing Kevin Stallings

Pittsburgh head coach Kevin Stallings argues a call with a referee during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game against Notre Dame in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament Tuesday, March 6, 2018, in NY.

With the firing of Kevin Stallings by Pitt Thursday, athletic director Heather Lyke will begin searching for a replacement to coach the men's basketball program. FanRag Sports reported the development first. In two seasons in Pittsburgh, Stallings' record was 24-41.

Not only is Kevin Stallings done at Pitt, he's done coaching college basketball.

The Panthers tried to negotiate a cheaper buyout with Stallings than the $9.4 million they owed him, but reports indicated as of Wednesday that Stallings was not willing to accept one. This despite signing the coach to a six-year deal two years ago. Pitt finished the year 8-24 overall and 0-18 in ACC play.

The Panthers' 2017-18 season, which ended on Tuesday with a loss to Notre Dame in the first round of the ACC tournament, was an unmitigated disaster.

Stallings was hired in 2016 after a long run at Vanderbilt during which he made seven NCAA tournament appearances.
