Racist chants caught on camera at university

In the short clip, which has been shared over 21,000 times and gained over 655,000 views, chants of "we hate the blacks" and "fuck the blacks" can be heard.

Rufaro Chisango, the only black student on her floor, filmed the video from inside her room on Monday night, where the chanting was happening directly outside of her door. "Words can not describe how sad this makes me feel, in this 2018 people think this is still acceptable", Rufaro Chisango, who goes by the name "Ruu" on Twitter, wrote on Wednesday. In a Twitter thread, she said she was unable to record the students say "blacks would go back to picking cotton".

The footage, which shows only the closed door of Chisango's bedroom, also captures the sound of one voice shouting: "The blacks and the whites all together" and "I have a dream", in a reference to the speech delivered by Dr Martin Luther King Jr at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

Lilian Greenwood, the Labour MP for Nottingham South said she is "appalled" by the video, while Jess Phillips, who sits on the women and equalities committee wrote also wrote, saying she "hope it gets sorted". "This kind of vile behaviour will not be tolerated at Nottingham Trent University", its statement said.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesperson said: "We treat hate crime as a priority".

"I told the reception and they said that this will be dealt with Tuesday morning, they took my details and said they would inform me", she tweeted.

"We value being a diverse global community, with staff and students from across the world".

Video of the incident spurred messages of support from fellow students, friends and even government leaders.

In response to criticism surrounding its handling of the incident, the university said: "It's clear that there have been delays in dealing with this incident, and that is completely unacceptable".

The racism suffered by university students is part of the racism in wider society that's pushed by the Tories and right wing press. She said she is the only black person on her floor in the student dorm. "All my love and solidarity ... my heart breaks for this young woman and I have the utmost respect for her bravery in speaking out".
