Shiffrin repeats as World Cup champ

On Friday, Shiffrin secured her second straight overall title.

Shiffrin finished in third place, moving up a spot after her opening run, and she was only 0.74 seconds behind victor Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway.

Ultimately, she did not even need that as Wendy Holdener, the only woman who could have pushed the battle to another race, finished down in 14th. "It's hard to explain that feeling really", said Shiffrin, per The Olympian.

Since 2014, Shiffrin has raced in more than world championship and world cup slalom competitions and she recently competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang.

Austrian legend Annemarie Moser-Proell won her 41st race at age 21, then took a whole season off to care for her father before he died of lung cancer in 1976.

The Vail, Colorado, native joins Lindsey Vonn as the only other American female skier to win multiple overall World Cup titles. Vonn holds the American record with four season titles, which tally all the points in all the disciplines throughout the entire World Cup season.

And she did it with five races left in the season.

"For sure I have a big lead", Shiffrin said.

Shiffrin has won 11 races this season and has become the first skier with 42 World Cup wins in total before turning 23. "But nothing is impossible so I am going to stay focused".

Shiffrin now carries a 603-point lead into next week's World Cup Finals in Are, Sweden, and mathematically clinches her second-straight overall World Cup title.
