Phillies reportedly closing in on deal with Jake Arrieta

2015 National League Cy Young Award victor Jake Arrieta is nearing a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, according to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports.

The Phillies on Sunday reached an agreement in principle with the free-agent right-hander, according to two baseball sources.

Update (5:22 PM ET): The three-year deal is for $75 million in total, per Nightengale. He has been durable and effective since he was traded to the Cubs in 2013, though sometimes it takes time for his unique, cross-body delivery to lock in.

Arrieta had a 4.67 ERA in first 16 starts last season, but finished strong, going 7-4 with a 2.26 ERA in his final 14 outings. Arrieta will become the Phillies' second big free-agent signing this winter.

United Fans Loved What Lukaku Did After Rashford's Second Goal
Former Everton striker Romelu Lukaku played well for Manchester United against Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday. "People look at football and don't look what is going on around the life", the Croatia worldwide said.

Arrieta's market had dried up in this weird offseason after going 14-10 with a 3.53 ERA previous year with the Cubs.

Arrieta played the past five seasons with the Cubs and was a key member of the 2016 World Series championship winning team. Nick Pivetta, Zach Eflin, Mark Leiter and Ben Lively are also in the mix for a spot. It's a deal with an average-annual-value Arrieta expected, but perhaps not the money or years he expected. However, club officials distanced themselves from Arrieta and Darvish because of the length of deals the pitchers were seeking. Arrieta's deal nets him the cash he wanted but likely not the years, as he has been looking for a long term contract and settled for three years in Philly.

The signing actually does make the Phillies borderline wild card contenders, as their offense boasts young and potent bats.
