Kirk Cousins pens emotional letter to Redskins fans

NFL teams are free to begin making their pitch to free agents Monday ahead of the new league year beginning Wednesday.

"I am filled with gratitude over the unwavering support and devotion from you, the fans, both on and off the field", Cousins wrote.

Last year Cousins threw for 4,093 yards with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions for the Washington Redskins.

The Jets could turn back to Josh McCown, last year's starter, if Cousins goes elsewhere.

This time, he has the opportunity to earn life-changing money few journeymen ever see. But did Cousins accidentally let everyone know that it's really a two-team race between the Jets and the Vikings?

Along with the Vikings, the New York Jets, Denver Broncos, and Arizona Cardinals are expected to be contenders is the Cousins sweepstakes, according to Austin Knoblauch of The Big Four would have a chance to eventually develop into a franchise-type quarterback but it's hard for any team to reach the playoffs with a rookie quarterback.

I think we're all grateful they left Von on the board in that case, but now the Broncos are in the market for a franchise quarterback, and there's only one of those on the free agent market. "If it works out price-wise and everything else, you get some good ones".

Bust as reports and speculation fly about Cousins's next team, the Broncos must also consider their fallback plans among the second-tier free-agent quarterbacks. The Jets have a league-leading $89.8 million in salary-cap space after the Cleveland Browns went trade insane over the weekend.

Headlining that group was cornerback Darrelle Revis, who signed a five-year, $70-million deal with $39 million guaranteed.

Cousins feels rejected after he and the Redskins failed to reach a contract agreement in 2016.

With that said, I trust Rick Spielman to do the right thing, and if that means Cousins on an insanely rich but somewhat short-term contract, I'll get on board and hope for the best.

The Redskins will trade for quarterback Alex Smith, who is four years older.
