Tillerson Fired as Secretary of State

Trump on Tuesday said he had selected Pompeo, a 54-year-old conservative Republican who has served since last year as Central Intelligence Agency director, to replace fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in the biggest Cabinet shakeup of his presidency.

Mr. Trump released a statement saying he was "proud" to nominate Pompeo to replace Tillerson.

USA stock index futures pared their gains and the dollar also trimmed gains versus the yen while extending losses versus the euro amid the news.

According to the Washington Post, Trump asked Tillerson to step aside last Friday.

In December Mr Tillerson had offered to begin direct talks with North Korea without pre-conditions, backing away from a key United States demand that Pyongyang must first accept that any negotiations would be about giving up its nuclear arsenal. He will do a fantastic job!

Senior State Department officials said Mr Tillerson was unaware of why Mr Trump pushed him out and that he had meant to stay in the job.

Early in 2018, Trump said on Twitter that Mr Tillerson was "wasting his time" trying to negotiate with North Korea.Tillerson had joined Defense Secretary Jim Mattis in pressing a sceptical Mr Trump to stick with the agreement with Iran and other world powers over Tehran's nuclear ambitions and he has taken a more hawkish view than Mr Trump on Russian Federation.

Southwest flight from Phoenix to Dallas makes emergency landing
Emergency crews responded after a Dallas-bound flight was diverted to the Albuquerque after smoke filled the aircraft's cabin. Most passengers on the original flight made it to Dallas' Love Field Monday morning, CBS Dallas Fort-Worth reported .

CBS News' Kylie Atwood reported that Tillerson was leaving his Africa trip early to return to Washington to talk with Mr. Trump about developments in North Korea, which he was largely left out of, as the White House announced it would be taking up talks with the regime sometime in May.

"She was the acting director for operations when I arrived, and she has a wealth of experience and background, and she has more than three decades experience overseas as well as at headquarters, ' said Brennan, saying she enjoyed 'tremendous respect" in the agency.

Much like his quick choice to take the meeting with Kim Jong-Un, Trump made a decision to remove Tillerson from his Cabinet post by himself, according to the AP. With Mike Pompeo we have a very similar thought process. "Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service!" Tillerson exits shy of 14 months on the job, making his one of the shortest tenures for a secretary of state in USA history. "I wish him all the best in his future endeavors".

"I think Rex will be much happier now", Trump said.

"He dived into policy matters in a way that unnerved many professionals at the agency", the official added,"and morale was taking a blow that was spreading from the analytical side, where some people feared he was tailoring some PDBs (President's Daily Briefs intelligence assessments presented to the president) to tell Trump what he wanted to hear rather than what the intelligence assessments were". "But that is why we do our job here and they do their job at the White House". The president and his surrogates consistently criticized reports that Tillerson would not last long - reports that now appear to have been well-founded.

Tillerson's departure marks the latest in a flood of turnover in Trump's inner circle, including the exits of national security advisor Mike Flynn, strategist Steve Bannon, chief of staff Reince Priebus, top economic advisor Gary Cohn, Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price, and White House communications director Hope Hicks.

He said Mr. Pompeo "will continue our program of restoring America's standing in the world, strengthening our alliances, confronting our adversaries, and seeking the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".
