Donald Trump dumps Rex Tillerson as secretary of state

Thank you Rex Tillerson for his service!

With James Mattis at Defense and H.R. McMaster as National Security Advisor, Tillerson was a check on a reckless, mercurial president.

Intelligence officers who served with her, and congressional officials said that in 2002, during Republican President George W. Bush's administration, she was responsible for the secret prison code-named "Cat's Eye". At one point, Trump said Tillerson was "wasting his time" trying diplomacy with North Korea. He specifically mentioned the Iran nuclear deal as an example of disagreement.

There was no immediate official reaction in Asia, partly because of the timing of Trump's announcement - late evening in China, Japan and the Korean Peninsula, where news of his intended meeting with the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, is still sinking in.

"This is very much in line with what we've seen". I made that decision by myself.

"You want to project that your administration is one of organization, you want to project confidence", she said.

Tillerson's firing capped off a tumultuous tenure at the helm of the State Department, marked by private tensions with Trump that often spilled out into the open - including a report of Tillerson referring to Trump as a "moron". "She's got the highest level of intellectual integrity and honesty". He also urged them to confront "challenges of sexual harassment within the department". FBI Director James Coomey, while leading investigation into possible collusion between Trump campaign team and Russians was sacked in May past year. Comey did not know whether he was authorized to take the FBI plane back home to Washington, D.C. The FBI sent him home without waiting for authorization.

"The Trump administration with Pompeo at the State Department has to mobilize the global community against Iran", said Alex Vatanka, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute in Washington.

Tillerson had emerged as a vocal critic on Russian Federation - for its role in the annexation of Crimea, support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and alleged meddling in the US election.

"As soon as we get the facts straight, and we're going to be speaking with the British today".

"We disagreed on things", Trump said Tuesday.

Trump finally losing patience with VA Sec. Shulkin
Shulkin pulled a similar move last week, meeting with Kelly and subsequently calling up The New York Times to declare victory. Shulkin met with Trump's chief of staff, John Kelly , at the White House March 5 to discuss the agency's turmoil.

While Pompeo is thought be closely aligned to Trump's aggressive foreign policy, Tillerson was thought to be a moderating influence in the Oval Office.

"Mike Pompeo, the CIA Director, will become our new Secretary".

Pompeo's nomination was expected to go smoothly, but Haspel's could be problematic.

If confirmed, 61-year-old Gina Haspel would become the first woman to lead the Central Intelligence Agency.

In a statement, Sen.

The "a$3 ppointment should be a warning to allies of the USA in the UK, Europe and around the world to rethink their cooperation with an administration which has refused again and again to show respect for the values we all share", Foa said. He said his formal resignation would officially take place at midnight March 31.

"Tillerson's ouster is a sign of continued turbulence in USA foreign policy", said Jessica Chen Weiss, a Cornell University professor. "Once you are in the secretary of state position, you need to be more pragmatic and take into account the huge stakes involved, so the impact will not be as big as some people expect". Trump interviewed several other prospects at Trump Tower in NY, including former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Massachusetts, before settling on the surprise choice of the former oil executive from Texas.

These generals threw him a lifeline to remain in power despite his numerous reprimands of Trump.

Pompeo and Tillerson navigated different paths with Trump, too. He has at least showed enough spine to publicly contradict Trump many times in stating unequivocally that it was Russian Federation who hacked and interfered with our election past year. Refusing to risk his credibility, Tillerson did not deny it. We should not be asked to confirm a nominee whose background can not be publicly discussed and who can not then be held accountable for her actions.

More consequentially for Canada, it's hard to imagine him as a counterweight to the protectionists dominating Mr. Trump's cabinet table.
