Math nerds, pie lovers ready to celebrate

March 14 - or 3/14 - is Pi Day, in honor of the symbol used in mathematics to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, or approximately 3.14159. Here's how you can too!

Celebrate Pi Day at the New Hanover County Myrtle Grove library on March 14 from 4-5 p.m. Feel free to check out a cookbook with pie recipes, make a pie using a recipe from a NHCPL cookbook or bring in pie to share with other Pi Day cooks.

Papa Murphy's: Get a large, thin one-topping pizza for $3.14 for online orders Wednesday at participating locations.

Whole Foods Market: Offering customers a $3.14 discount on any large pie from the bakery.

Cicis: The pizza-buffet chain is offering a buy one adult buffet, get a second buffet for $3.14 on March 14 only. Find their coupon online!

Marie Callender's Restaurant & Bakery: Visit the chain's website to print a coupon good for a free slice of pie with the purchase of a full-price adult entree.

The bookstore 2nd and Charles, 5331 South Boulevard, is giving away free McDonald's pies starting at 6 p.m., while supplies last.

Year after year, restaurants celebrate "Pi" Day with promotions just for you. March's special pies - celebration cake pie or lemon meringue - are also available for $9.79 each (including tin). Limited one per guest, dine-in only.

The Gage will serve a pie flight for $15 starting on Pi Day through the end of the month. There are only 10 spots available, but it's arguably more fun to see people stuff their faces than to stuff your own. And, as Whole Foods notes, all their pies are free of hydrogenated fats, bleached and bromated flours and artificial flavors or preservatives.

Locations not participating in Pi Day are Disney Springs, Houston Airport, UCLA, Staples Center, and George Mason University.
