Volusia slips to 44th, Flagler 14th in Florida health rankings

While Muskegon County ranks 75 out of 83 for overall health, there is some good news - 72 percent of women are getting their annual mammography screening.

Other West Michigan counties ranked highly in the list as well with Barry County at No. 10, Kent County at No. 12 and Allegan County at No. 14. Union County, with a population of about 15,000, was ranked the 67th or lowest county in the state.

The 2018 County Health Rankings were released on Wednesday and recognized Boone County as the number one county for clinical care.

When it comes to health factors, Forsyth was ranked 43rd.

Health rankings were determined by "how long people live and how healthy people feel", according to the report.

Clinical care, including access to care and quality of care.

The rankings representat a snapshot that compares counties within states. Beaufort County's rate is 19 percent.

The rankings are based on factors including smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, access to healthy foods, children in poverty, unemployment, level of education, premature death, low birth weight and air and water quality.

The County Health Rankings report also includes data on racial disparity, and Rivas observed a wide gap in MS regarding teen births and low birthweight, even in the overall healthier counties. This year's report shows Blacks in more segregated counties fare worse in rates of child poverty, infant mortality, and high school graduation than those in less segregated counties.

The RWJ foundation and the University of Wisconsin have been collaborating on this for 9 years.

The Buncombe County Family Justice Center (FJC) is an example of a community partnership that has been instrumental in The Rankings.

The goal of the ranking project is to give communities a look into their own health, which could provide opportunities for improvement.

"The Crater Health District is proud to be working with our community to improve health outcomes for all people in our district", says Dr. Alton Hart, the Crater Health District Director.

Lake County ranked dead last in the survey of 57 counties, down one spot from a year ago.

The new Rankings State Reports call attention to key drivers of health, such as children in poverty.

"We can't be a healthy, thriving nation if we continue to leave entire communities and populations behind", said Richard Besser, MD, RWJF president and CEO.

The organization is looking closer at social and economic factors as indicators of health than in the last nine years, Jerome said.
