Six killed in Raiwind explosion claimed by Tehreek-e-Taliban

The blast occured near the residence of Pakistan's ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He "sought a report from Inspector General Police" and directed the authorities to provide "best possible medical facilities and treatment to the injured persons", read a statement issued by the provincial government.

"Five policemen - two inspectors and three constables - are among nine persons killed in the blast.Around 14 policemen among the 25 who were injured in the blast.The condition of four policemen is stated to be critical", Rescue 1122 spokesman Jam Sajjad told PTI.

The area deputy inspector general police, Haider Ashraf, told reporters a religious congregation of about 60,000 people was underway in the Raiwind area and the bomber on a motorbike meant to attack the worshipers.

However, he did not give the exact age of the boy.

The blast occurred at a police checkpoint established to guard the Tableeghi Jamat headquarters in Raiwand, located in the outskirts of Lahore city, according to local Dunya News.

Ashraf said numerous wounded were police and three were hospitalized in critical condition.

Police confirmed the nature of the blast and declared it a suicide attack asserting that a terrorist approached the check post using a motorcycle.

It was such a powerful blast that its sound was heard several kilometres from the site.

Defunct Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

Attacks - including suicide bombings - have frequently hit Lahore and its surrounding areas in recent years.

In February previous year, 18 people were killed, including several police officials, and more than 80 wounded in a suicide attack during a protest on a busy intersection of Lahore.
