"My kid and two other students walked out of their rural, very conservative public school for 17 minutes today", Jerusalem Greer, a mother of one of the students, wrote on Twitter.

Last month's school shooting in Parkland, Florida, was just the latest in a string of violence on school campuses.

High school and middle school Principal Ezekiel Ohan expressed pride for the way students were conducting themselves and exercising their constitutional rights of assembly and free speech.

The message was clear as Central Oregon students participated in a nationwide school walkout on Wednesday.

MacDonald said he posted the video to publicize the incident which, he said, "violates the first amendment and makes me sick". "Then we had a moment of silence together to honor them", she said.

"We have been failed at the Colorado state house and at the capital building in Washington D.C. and across our country", Fairview student Henry Magowan told the crowd.

Similar walkouts were held at North Valleys High School and Yerington High School.

And when something unthinkable like Parkland happens, we can finally blame not just the shooter, but also the weapons he carried capable of killing a large number of people in less than a minute.

To Palmer High School in Colorado Springs. Students said they wanted to honor the 17 killed in Parkland and call for change.

But across the rest of Nashville - and the rest of the country - the student walkouts were peaceful.

For those who were being disruptive during the walkout, student leaders demanded they show respect for those who lost their lives and reminded them why they were participating in the walkout.
