Because Trace Elementary School would not allow students to walk out, Leonardo Aguilar asked his mom to walk him over to nearby Lincoln High to join the rally.

At nearby Penn Alexander Elementary school, students demonstrated by forming a peace sign with their bodies.

Morrison said after several days their hands hurt, "but we felt it was important to reach out and let the students know we care about them".

On April 20, another National School Walkout is planned, marking the anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting. "We can make an impact while exercising our First Amendment right".

Students at Hannah Senesh Community Day School in Brooklyn also held a prayer memorial service. The majority of students took part, said Annette Powers, the school's director of communications and marketing.

More than 50 students walked out in Bellefonte, outside State College, instead of assembling at a school-sanctioned location inside.

In Warren County, protesters at Warren Hills Regional High School were warned they would receive an after-school detention for leaving the building without permission.

The students showed a determination, introspection and balance of idealism and pragmatism missing from prior protests, most recently the 2016 walkouts over Donald Trump's presidential victory.
