Serena dumped out of Miami Open

Tennis superstar Serena Williams is a well-documented fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, but one particular question about the show's origin myth had her stumped this week until a fan stepped in on Twitter.

Williams, who made her WTA Tour comeback in the Californian Desert earlier this month after a 14-month absence to have her first child, struggled for consistency in a one-hour-and-18-minute defeat.

The newlywed - who is an an eight-time Miami Open champion - also hit the football field, where she used a hefty-looking shovel to break the dirt along with Dolphins majority owner Stephen Ross and tournament owner Mark Shapiro. Her results in Indian Wells give her a ranking of No. 491 this week.

Blake lamented that rules didn't allow Williams to keep her seeding points and get an easier draw.

"I think that's going to be a huge story, maybe the story of the year", said Roger Federer, hoping she could combine tennis and motherhood successfully.

Williams, a record eight-time victor of the tournament, was the face of the ceremony.

"It's not as if she left because of injury and lost her passion for the game".

The Miami Open is being held on Key Biscayne for the final time during the next two weeks; and the new era of the tennis tournament officially began Monday with a lavish groundbreaking ceremony at Hard Rock Stadium, where the event will move in 2019 after 31 years at its tropical, if outdated home.

Venus and Serena Williams met for the 29th time on Monday with Serena leading her older sister 17-11 in victories. This encounter took place in Indian Wells California

"It's a kind of punishment, which is tough", Blake continued, per The Washington Post.

"For now I will just be a player - who knows what will happen in the future", she said of her role in the new-look tournament. "She is looking forward to every day as a new challenge and that's what makes her such a good champion", Blake said. The rule is now written in such a way that those coming back from pregnancy are treated similarly to those that miss due to long-term injuries.

Special seedings were sometimes applied to those players returning from long lay-offs but that rule was scrapped by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).

It sets a precedent and bad example that top female players can not freely take a step away from their profession through pregnancy and return to where they rightfully and previously belonged.

Serena Williams was working in February with an assist from husband Alexis Ohanian (holding baby Alexis Olympia).

"This match should not be happening in a 3rd round", the Australian wrote on Twitter.

Even with the legal protections in place for women on maternity leave, returning as an "unseeded player" is a pretty apt metaphor for most mothers' re-entry to the workplace. For starters, the victor of that massive first-round match will have to face world No. 4 Elina Svitolina in the second round, providing more early-round women's excitement in Miami.
