Never Disappoints At The Masters

Never Disappoints At The Masters

Here are observations and insights from the week at Augusta National where Patrick Reed highlighted his skills for three days and then fight, grit and guts on Sunday when it counted.

Another round to "Captain America". Patrick Reed had one and a half arms in the Green Jacket on Saturday night.

Maybe that's why when he turned on the television Sunday morning with a three-shot lead, he heard plenty of flattering observations about his game without anyone thinking he was going to win. He called out Reed in his media commitments. "I've been waiting for this chance", he said on Saturday night, and a long time, too.

- Charlie Daniels (@CharlieDaniels)Well done Patrick Reed. It fueled his fire. Reed found a way to cope.

They won't forget him now. One of the best there is. But the game of golf always has those moments where things could have been a fraction different and outcomes change. "The Reeds' is key to understanding the newly minted Masters champ, a complicated man who is still trying to outrun his shadows". McIlroy's putter betrayed him - he missed four putts inside 10 feet on the front nine - and he was never a factor on the back nine. An approach into the par-5 13th didn't seem to have the legs to get over Rae's Creek but instead of finding a watery grave it stayed up on the bank allowing for a par save. But it was motoring. Didn't hit the ball well enough to win. A little to the other and his par putt was at least double the distance.

With Reed being a right-to-left drawer and Augusta suiting that very shape, you'd have though he would have to just turn up and find fairway after fairway.

"Honestly, I felt like a lot of that pressure was kind of lifted and kind of taken off of me", Reed said.

And don't forget he's just 27 years old. What he nearly pulled off Sunday would have been in the conversation of all-time Sunday performances in golf history.

Fowler endured another near-miss, but his charging final-round 67, which left him one shot behind Reed, had him looking forward to the US Open at Shinecock in June. He also did it with a massive smile.

We take a look at the finer details... Incredibly talented. Proven victor on the PGA TOUR and European Tour. Sam Greenwood/Getty Images Reed typically wears a red shirt, black trousers, and a black cap during the final round of a tournament, as he did recently at the Valspar Championship. "Unfortunately, I was one shot short". But for a guy playing in his first major since the 2015 PGA Championship thanks to a seriously messed-up back, the 1-over-par finish was a sign that things are rounding back into form. Early on Sunday it appeared Fowler was just going to fade into obscurity without threatening.

Fowler didn't win The Masters this year, but he came ever so near. Perhaps rather than Garcia, who needed 74 starts to win, Fowler can follow the path of Jason Day. In that case, watch out for Rickie the rest of this season. He said he couldn't wait to tee it up in the final group.

Reed was greeted by his wife Justine and her family after donning the green jacket, but some commentary focused on the absence of the golfer's own parents and sister. Why don't you ask them? Today I got myself there, I didn't quite do enough but I'll still come back next year and try again.

"Shinnecock [Hills, venue for the US Open] is one of my favourite golf courses in the US".

He'd spent 16 hours on the course practising for every single situation that could arise during Masters week before the tournament week had even begun.

He birdied No. 13 after hitting the green with a 234-yard hybrid club from the pine straw to move to 12-under, now just two back. On Sunday he cooled off with four pars, but the damage was done. Justin Thomas extended his margin as FedExCup leader with a 440-point lead over Patton Kizzire. He had just two three-putts all week.
