This Week Is Severe Weather Awareness Week

"Most emergencies are small, but if not prepared, can become costly or even catastrophic", County Emergency Management Director John Bowen said in a news release. The statewide tornado drill is a part of a seasonal effort to encourage MI residents to take action to prepare and practice emergency plans.

MI residents participating in the statewide tornado drill will observe or hear alerts on NOAA Weather Radios and participating TV and radio stations.

While almost all state of MI facilities will participate, businesses, organizations and families can choose to engage in the preparedness activity.

According to the NWS, Wisconsin averages 23 tornadoes annually. Knowing about emergency alert signals and having a plan of action can save lives and reduce property damage.”.

Hennepin County, along with the rest of the state, will be activating its outdoor warning sirens twice Thursday. Although, a tornado can occur during any time of year. Most local radio and television stations will broadcast simulated alerts.

Go under something sturdy, such as a workbench or stairwell, when taking shelter in the basement or designated spot.

Gov. Rick Snyder has proclaimed Michigan's Severe Weather Awareness Week from April 8-14. Make sure each household member knows where to go and what to do in the event of a tornado. The drills are part of the annual spring severe weather campaign to encourage everyone in Wisconsin to be ready for possible tornadoes and severe weather.

Prepare an emergency kit ahead of time, with food, water, and supplies.
