Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman provided no evidence to back up the claim. The Palestinians demand this right not only for those of the hundreds of thousands of refugees who are still alive - a figure estimated in the low tens of thousands - but also for their descendants, who number in the millions.

The 81-second clip surfaced on social media on Monday and led Israeli TV news, with one host calling it "disturbing". It also has suggested that it may attempt a mass border breach.

They have a right to protest against their appalling conditions and the continuing blockade and occupation of Palestinian land, and in support of their right to return to their homes and their right to self-determination. Israel says it has only fired at "instigators" trying to carry out attacks. Israeli snipers shot and killed Murtaja while he was wearing a jacket clearly marked "PRESS".

On Friday, the Israeli military's Arabic spokesperson tweeted a photo with Palestinian children in a sniper scope captioned: "We see you well".

"This is a member of the military arm of Hamas who holds a rank parallel to that of captain, who was active in Hamas for many years", Lieberman said.

"The professed shock they now express, as well as their promise to investigate, are just lip service: as before, their "thorough investigation" will once again whitewash the truth", he said. His media company had recently received funding from the US State Department.

The impact of the footage was amplified by the timing of its release. He died two days before he was to start his new job.

Israel's military confirmed on Tuesday the authenticity of a video posted online over the weekend showing the shooting of a Palestinian protester in Gaza by an Israeli sniper and the cheers of his fellow soldiers.

In a statement pledging disciplinary action an Israeli Army spokesman said the incident took place took place on December 22, amid Palestinian unrest at U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

"Son of a bitch!" a soldier is heard yelling in the video as the Palestinian man is shot and falls, as reported by CNN.

Soldiers talk over each over and then we see two of the Palestinians squatting near the barbed wire, while the third remains standing motionless.

"You keep hearing that anybody who is coming close to the fence will be shot, and anybody who is participating in those demonstrations 'is part of Hamas, they want to destroy Israel, everybody is a terrorist, the demonstrations are totally illegitimate, '" said Stein.

It condemned the filming of the incident and the statements the soldiers made.
