The temple is nearing the conversion of its Barnett Social Hall and Brody Educational Building into a museum concentrating on the Holocaust and the history of the Jewish community in Sumter. People gathered to listen to Holocaust survivors share their memories.

Year after year, people around the world, especially those of the Jewish faith, remember the 6 million Jews killed almost 80 years ago.

"When hatred is allowed full-throated expression, when men and women of conscience are silenced or overpowered, and when the dignity that is the inalienable right that all humans hold in common is forgotten, then the result is the ghetto, the mass grave and the crematorium", said Mr. Lo.

The annual Yom Hashoah Holocaust Remembrance Day - which begins Wednesday at sundown - began with a procession of teens and Holocaust survivors and included a first hand account from David Schaecter, 88, who was 11 when he was taken from his family's Salvakian farm. "We don't learn from this, because it continues to happen time and time again".

"We ask all Ocean County residents to pause with us and remember the victims of the Holocaust", said Freeholder Director Gerry P. Little.

Drawing comparisons to European appeasement of Hitler before World War II, Netanyahu said the nuclear deal "released the Iranian regime from its chains and since has devoured country after country, similar to what happened in Europe in the 1930s".

Saluting the Jews who fought with the allied forces, Bennett recalled how as a child he thought only certain individuals showed bravery during the Holocaust.

"Wanted to survive, we want our story to be told", said survivor Ray Kaner.

The names of Holocaust victims are read out in parliament.

About 13,000 Jews died during the uprising, which serves as a reminder of Jewish sacrifice and resistance, said Stacy Petersohn, Rabbi of Congregation Emanu-El Israel in Greensburg.

"They never had a chance", Diesenhouse said of her aunts, killed when they were nine and eleven years old.

The Holocaust Knowledge and Awareness Study also found that a significant majority of American adults believe that fewer people care about the Holocaust today than they used to, and pointed to critical gaps in awareness of basic facts as well as detailed knowledge of the Holocaust.
