AMD Ryzen 2nd Gen Processor Now Available For Preorder

AMD Ryzen 2nd Gen Processor Now Available For Preorder

While we can't talk about performance numbers or anything aside from a surface-level overview just yet, we do have information on the processor specifications and prices to share.

Those who want to be among the first to receive an AMD Ryzen 2nd gen processor can preorder one today at multiple retailers and PC manufacturers. Customers around the world are waiting to begin their pre-orders, beginning from April 13, at 9 a.m. EDT. The new Ryzen line-up includes two eight-core models with 16 threads and two six-core models with 12 threads, and the company said all of them are big upgrades from the first-gen models and feature its advanced "SenseMI technology". Expect the Ryzen 7 line to compete with Intel's Core i7-8700 and 8700K, while the Ryzen 5 lineup should compare favorably to Intel's Core i5-8400 and 8600K. It has a 3.7GHz base clock and 4.3GHz boost clock, and 20MB of L3 cache.

The 2700 also has the 8/16 core/thread count and the same amount of cache but has lower 3.2GHz/4.1GHz base/boost clock speed and a lower 65W TDP. The new Ryzen 7 2700X, Ryzen 7 2700, Ryzen 5 2600X and Ryzen 5 2600 replace the equivalent 1000-series CPU models and promise improved performance across a range of PC workloads.

Lastly, the 2600 has the same number of cores, threads and cache as the 2600X but 3.4GHz/3.9GHz base/boost clock speed and 65W TDP. Motherboards based on this new chipset will carry the X470 designation. The Ryzen 7 2700 also comes packaged with the Wraith Spire, and the Ryzen 5 2600 a Wraith Stealth. The most impressive of these is a new new Wraith Prism cooler which comes with the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X CPU PIB. The cooler is quite hefty and includes a fair bit of copper on the base, plus you get a clear fan with an RGB ring around the outside. All that and much more will be revealed on April 19. Compatible with all current AM4 processors, the new X470 motherboards augment the existing 300-series motherboards, which are also compatible with the new 2nd gen Ryzen processors after a simple firmware (BIOS) update is installed. X470 will coexist alongside X370, B350 and A320 for now; AMD has not announced a "B450" or "A420" today.

While you won't need one of the brand-new X470-equipped motherboards for the latest Ryzen chips - AMD are supporting backwards-compatibility until 2020 - the red team are promising a few benefits with the latest chipset.

Like its predecessors, the Ryzen 2700X has no integrated graphics processor, which means you'll have to install your own discrete GPU alongside it.
