Kathua rape-murder case: The body of the girl was recovered from Rassana forest on January 17, a week after she went missing while grazing horses in the forest area. "Heartening to see the Supreme Court take cognisance of the attempted obstruction of justice by some lawyers in the brutal Kathua rape and murder case reminding us once again of the greatness of this nation", she wrote.

Opposition's National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, however, lashed out at the chief minister for not taking any action against two BJP ministers who had attended a rally held in support of the persons accused in the case.

Informed sources said the state government terminated the services of a sub-inspector, a head constable and two Special Police Officers (SPOs) accused in the crime.

Mehbooba Mufti also took to Twitter to address the people of Jammu for rejecting "communal forces" and for their steady support for the eight-year-old vicitim. "We have to keep this civilization alive", she said.

Later, during investigation, the police arrested the caretaker and alleged that he was the mastermind of kidnapping, rape and killing of the girl from a nomadic tribe with an ulterior motive of terrifying the community and drive them out of the village.

Meanwhile, PDP MLC Naeem Akhtar said that he wanted justice for the eight-year-old girl "at the earliest". "Despite concerns and warnings by democratic forces in and outside the state about this opportunist alliance, the PDP gave damn to it and today they have put a sensitive state like J&K in deep crisis", he said. "This government will soon bring a law in the state under which people who rape minors will be given the death penalty", he added.
